Children trapped 900 feet in air when chairlift cable snaps in Pakistan’s northwest

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — An urgent rescue effort is underway in Pakistan for six children and two adults trapped in a chairlift dangling 900 feet (274 meters) over a mountainous region in the country’s northwest.The children were traveling to school in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when one of the chairlift’s cables snapped at 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday, according to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).A surveillance helicopter reached the location of the chairlift first, before a larger helicopter arrived to ensure that there is enough space to carry everyone being rescued, said the district’s deputy commissioner Tanveer Ur Rehman.Two of the students on the chairlift are slipping in and out of consciousness, one of the passengers told Pakistani media outlet Geo News.The passenger, named only as Gulfaraz, urged state authorities to take action. (CNN) — A tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico has strengthened into a tropical storm as it continues to churn toward South Texas, where residents were bracing for heavy rain, flooding, powerful winds and dangerous rip currents Tuesday.Tropical Storm Harold maximum had sustained winds of 45 mph around 2 a.m. ET Tuesday, when its center was about 195 miles east-southeast of Port Mansfield, Texas, the National Hurricane Center said. BEIJING (AP) — Authorities say 11 people have been killed in a coal mine explosion in northern China, in a reminder of the country’s continued dependence on the energy source.The blast occurred late Monday on the outskirts of the historic city of Yan’an in mountainous Shaanxi province, where mining has long been a key driver of the local economy.
