Maine asks railroad to fix roads, culverts after derailment

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine environmental regulators have asked a railroad cleaning up a freight train derailment site to repair forest management roads and culverts damaged by heavy equipment and that led to the discharge of sediment into area waters.State Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Melanie Loyzim in a letter Thursday to Canadian Pacific Kansas City said the equipment used to reach the derailment site in a rural area of Somerset County “crushed culverts and displaced soil in and adjacent to several streams,” and no attempts have been made to correct the damage.“CPKC must immediately take measures to stabilize the access roads leading to the derailment site, stabilize all stream and culvert crossings, and prevent further discharges of sediment to waters of the state of Maine,” the letter said.An email seeking comment was sent to a CPKC spokesperson on Saturday.Three railroad employees were hurt when three locomotive engines and six train cars car...

Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying a baby girl’s remains found in a recycling facility processing materials from Martha’s Vineyard.Workers at Zero Waste Solutions on Cranberry Highway in Rochester on Thursday came across the baby’s body in collected recycling originating from Martha’s Vineyard and shipped to the regional facility in Rochester.The Massachusetts State Police and Cape and Islands DA office say that the newborn infant’s mother may live in, have ties to or recently traveled to Martha’s Vineyard.The baby’s remains were turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical examiner, where the MSP says a post-mortem examination has begun.Anyone who has any information about the possible identity of this baby girl or her parents is urged to contact Trooper Dustin Shaw of the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands at at 508-790-5799.This is a developing story.

SAN DIEGO -- If you've noticed an increase in low hanging clouds or lingering fog in San Diego County's coastal areas recently, there's a reason why.The National Weather Service says the region is in the peak of marine layer season. The question is: what creates these hazy weather patterns in the spring?The answer is as simple as this -- cold water. Coastal fog contributes to what NWS calls ‘Gray-pril’ Air temperature normally decreases with height, according to weather officials. Due to the cold Pacific Ocean in the spring months, however, NWS says the air temperature in coastal areas increases with height instead. NWS says this results in a temperature inversion. The air below that inversion is called the marine layer, which is cooled to the point at which clouds form, weather officials explained. (AP) — Natural gas is flowing again in a Mississippi pipeline after a towering blaze Friday that officials believe was caused by a lightning strike.The pipeline’s owner, TC Energy Corp. of Calgary, Alberta, said Saturday that it had “completed operational adjustments.” The Canadian company notified its customers through an electronic system that it was lifting the force majeure it had declared on Friday. LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. — An Indiana man is dead after he ran a red light Friday afternoon in La Porte County and was hit by a semi-truck driver, according to the sheriff's office.Around 3:30 p.m., Brent Freyenberger, 39, of Plymouth, ran a red light at U.S. 30 and State Road 39 near Hanna Township and was struck by the truck, according to a news release from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office.
