Tech and metals stocks help lift S&P/TSX composite, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Strength in technology and base metal stocks helped Canada’s main stock index climb higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.The S&P/TSX composite index was up 35.07 points at 20,474.94.In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 15.64 points at 33,515.19. Canada Infrastructure Bank loaning $220M to Flo for EV charging network expansion

TORONTO — Electric vehicle drivers can expect more charging options ahead as the Canada Infrastructure Bank is loaning $220 million to Flo Services Inc. to expand its network.The Infrastructure Bank says the loan will allow Montreal-based Flo to install more than 2,000 charging ports, nearly doubling the number of universal public fast charging ports available in Canada.The loan is the first from the Infrastructure Bank’s $500 million fund designed specifically to increase EV charging and hydrogen refuelling options.Flo will own and operate the network that will mostly use its own dual-port, 320 kilowatt chargers designed to bring most EV batteries to an 80 per cent charge in 15 minutes.The chargers are expected to be installed within four years at about 400 sites across Canada.Investments in charging networks come as the government is also mandating that at least 60 per cent of vehicle sales be electric by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035.This report by The Canadian Press was fi...

Psychiatric evaluation completed for man accused of crashing bus into Quebec daycare

LAVAL, Que. — A psychiatric hospital has completed an evaluation of a man accused of killing two young children by driving a city bus into a Montreal-area daycare. Montreal’s Philippe-Pinel institute had been mandated to evaluate Pierre Ny St-Amand’s mental state at the time of his alleged crimes on Feb. 8.Both the Crown and the defence told a Laval, Que., courtroom that they had only received the 22-page report earlier today, and they asked that case be put off until June 13 to allow them to evaluate its contents.St-Amand appeared in court by video conference and listened without showing emotion as the judge ordered the evaluation sealed.The 51-year-old driver with the Laval transit corporation was arrested after a bus crashed into the front of a daycare in the city’s Ste-Rose neighbourhood, killing two four-year-olds and injuring six other children.He faces two counts of first-degree murder as well as seven other charges, including attempted murder and aggravated...

York Regional Police are searching for a male Uber driver that allegedly sexually assaulted a female passenger in Vaughan and stole her phone to leave him a good review on the app.Authorities say the suspect was working as an Uber driver in a white 2021 Toyota Corolla on April 23 when he picked up an adult woman in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue area in Toronto to transport her to Vaughan.The Uber driver allegedly pulled over into a parking lot in the Rutherford Road and Weston Road area in Vaughan, where he sexually assaulted the woman.Police said the male driver then took the victim’s phone, concluded the trip on the Uber app and gave himself a five-star review and a monetary tip.The woman got her phone back and exited the vehicle. Australian coal company withdraws plan for mine in Alberta foothills

An Australian coal company is withdrawing its plan for a mine in the Crowsnest Pass region of the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.In a letter, Montem Resources is asking the Alberta Energy Regulator to end the environmental impact assessment for its Tent Mountain proposal.The letter says the company will not be resuming mining for metallurgical coal at the site, which last operated in 1983.  CEO Peter Doyle says the company will instead be focusing efforts on building a renewable hydro project at the site. In February, Montem announced a deal with TransAlta in which the utility would acquire a 50 per cent interest in the plan to combine wind and hydro to generate renewable electricity. Doyle says a final decision on whether to proceed with the renewable energy plan will come in 2025. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 26, 2023.The Canadian Press

Microsoft opens top cloud data processing hub in Poland

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Microsoft said Wednesday it has launched a cloud service “region” in central Poland, the first large-scale data storage and processing hub of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe. The cloud region, which is part of Microsoft’s $1 billion IT transformation plan for Poland, consists of three separate physical locations around Warsaw. CHICAGO — A man has been charged in a 2021 shooting that led to a fatal hit-and-run crash on the city's North Side.Ollonzo Wilson, 38 of Dolton, has been charged with murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and failure to report an accident/death.According to police, Wilson was arrested Monday after being identified as the person responsible for a fatal crash that happened on Oct. 3, 2021 in the 2400 block of West Irving Park Road.
